Very Interesting. I would think its only a matter of time until we see more technologies like this incorporated into the top search engines.

Someone just pointed out to me that on the Sunday morning show 'This Week with George Stephanopoulos', David Sanger (NY Times) said the following when discussing the recent attempted attack on the airplane:

"And in talking to people in the administration this week, I was struck by the fact, even they acknowledge that there's nothing in the way our computer systems are put together now that actually would do the equivalent of a Google search that would connect all of these. And, in fact, if you apply for a visa, you're only checked against those computer systems at the moment you apply. It doesn't come back later on. "

Search engine optimization is indeed an important strategy to increase traffic into your website. If you have an online business, more visitors mean higher possibility of buyers. And if you have a monetized blog, more visitors mean higher possibility of more people clicking on the ads. I do SEO for my websites and blogs. And this has helped me a lot in my success.

Jerome, to play Devil's advocate here SharePoint 2010 is a beta product. A bug free beta is not a beta at all and to be fair most of your complaints about the 2010 conference site are UI and UX flaws and not necessarily bugs in the underlying technology.

Sharepoint's sales model playing with it's inclusion within Microsoft bundled offers was key to it's impressive deployment on the market. Functionnaly speaking, it is another story and Sharepoint is definitly not a good vehicule for true collaboration and collective intelligence developments within and outside organizations.
Open Source & Best of Breed approaches are much more powerful, flexible, adaptable and connectable to the internal and external datas & support more means of interaction ... interoperability, interconnection are keys to success in today's environment, you cannot ignore the rest of the world anymore even when you're named Microsoft, IBM or SAP ...
Fast used to be a very attractive technology because of it's ability to scale, to be personalized and so ... but it is also a very sophisticated technology that is not easy to drive ... Search is not an easy topic neither ! May be Microsoft bought something too difficult to assimilate in it's core products ...

FAST for SharePoint will enable access to the "old" content API in an upcoming release. This will allow you to use all the old connectors.

And my guess is FAST will be the defacto engine in the next relase of SharePoint. It takes time to window'ify a unix product.

Neil,

A copy of the article can be read on Media Buzz's site.

As for the inhibitors to true enterprise search, I believe that for the most part it is a lack of connectivity. Many organizations implementing search lack the confidence in their own search engine that it can connect well to 3rd party data repositories, respect security properly and refresh dynamically as new content is added. It has been the promise of many in the past, yet few have been able to successfully deliver upon that vision.

Of course I am biased, but I do believe that Vivisimo has proven its ability to do this for very large global organizations. Evidence of this is most recently Procter & Gamble won the KMWorld Reality Award for their success in deploying true enterprise search enabling their users to search across a large amount of their content.
