Sharepoint's sales model playing with it's inclusion within Microsoft bundled offers was key to it's impressive deployment on the market. Functionnaly speaking, it is another story and Sharepoint is definitly not a good vehicule for true collaboration and collective intelligence developments within and outside organizations.
Open Source & Best of Breed approaches are much more powerful, flexible, adaptable and connectable to the internal and external datas & support more means of interaction ... interoperability, interconnection are keys to success in today's environment, you cannot ignore the rest of the world anymore even when you're named Microsoft, IBM or SAP ...
Fast used to be a very attractive technology because of it's ability to scale, to be personalized and so ... but it is also a very sophisticated technology that is not easy to drive ... Search is not an easy topic neither ! May be Microsoft bought something too difficult to assimilate in it's core products ...

FAST for SharePoint will enable access to the "old" content API in an upcoming release. This will allow you to use all the old connectors.

And my guess is FAST will be the defacto engine in the next relase of SharePoint. It takes time to window'ify a unix product.
